| 2007 CATCH & RELEASE FLATHEAD COMPETITION
NEWSLETTER: # 1 November 2007
2007 CATCH & RELEASE FLATHEAD COMPETITION
Right back in early 2006, when we decided to take on our fishing tackle shop challenge, we were going to have a monthly newsletter which would include amusing anecdotes, witticisms, specials, photos and all the rest: however, there is a lot to running such a business, and the newsletter idea had to go on the backburner with so many of our other unrealised projects. This week, after the successes and dramas of the Flathead Comp. a few days ago, it seemed a good time to make a start!
Congratulations and Thank You to all who were involved in our inaugural comp., both competitors and others. We were astounded at the final numbers: 58 boats, and 132 competitors, including 29 juniors. We even got some female anglers involved, which was immensely gratifying.
The biggest crunch of the weekend was the unexpected spillage of a coke drink into our laptop computer, onto which all of the information prior to and during the competition was being stored. This occurred almost simultaneously with the weigh in for Session 2 starting, so as the weigh in progressed, so did the collapse of the laptop. Fortunately, Kelly, one of our trusted helpers, had the good sense to insert the USB as the computer was doing the death rattle. The jury is still out on the laptop’s prognosis, but the good news is that the weights of the fish were retrieved, and have been ranked. The results are overleaf.
We had all sorts of help on the weekend, both verbal and practical, and as usual there was a great feeling of being part of a team that is creating something unique. Having a big event in your own community is second only to having all your very best friends around you.
Some unasked for generosity turned up in the form of our friends from the Sailo’s Restaurant providing us and all our helpers with a spectacular repast on Sunday night after the comp. They had seen the exodus of boats earlier in the day and felt that the event was a terrific boon for the river and the town. So Thank You Glen & James – we all ate too much, but really can you ever have too much seafood and good salad. It was a fantastic way to end the day.
We couldn’t hold an event like this without the support given by many of our suppliers, in the form of donations, special discounts and merchandise. The kids participation packs were boosted greatly by the donations from Daiwa of the bags, key rings, stickers and some of the caps. Our good friend Steve at Blue Acres produced some of his Slip-not range of boat securing devices, which simplify boating to quite a large degree.
Fortunate indeed were we also to have had Barry and Dawn and the troops from Taree Fast Food down at the park with us on Saturday filling the crowds with their own particular style of catering. They will be donating part of their profit from the day to our favourite charity – ROYAL FAR WEST COUNTRY CHILDREN’S HEALTH SCHEME, which is an organisation that has contributed a lot to our family and many others in this area, as well as all over country NSW. To find out more about the help offered by this facility, have a look at the website: www.royalfarwest.org.au.

Bragging may not bring happiness, but no man having caught a large fish goes home through an alley.
Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy. The fisherman is the most trustworthy.
